Resurrection…

Holy Trinity Church, Buckfastleigh.

With almost clear skies it looked like another chance to shoot a star trail at the ruins of Holy Trinity Church in Buckfastleigh, although the last time I tried the cloud descended and blew any chance there might have been. On this occasion I visited the location with fellow NAPC members Richard and Mark, and although the skies looked clear during the relatively short trip to the location there was a small but significant amount of cloud cover which looked as if it might put the mockers on yet another opportunity. Due North

Combestone Tor, Dartmoor.

The light had just started to fade when my mobile went off, it was a text my friend Richard Taylor about to bend my ear and get me out into the cold and harsh landscape of Dartmoor for another star trail. I instantly agreed and gave my old college friend and now pro photographer David Clapp a shout as I knew he had just bought an Astro Trac he was keen to start trying out. (more…)

Stone Washed

Westward Ho!, North Devon.

Shooting here today was never going to be easy as the wind was up causing plenty of sea spray. Keeping the front of the lens clear was a constant battle which I feel I was loosing for most of the day.

This was shot with the camera sat down very low to the ground which reminds me I must check the conditions of my insurance, i’m sure there would be clause letting them of the hook somewhere in the small print as always. (more…)

Star Struck

Bowerman’s Nose, South Dartmoor.

As I looked out the patio doors Sunday evening gazing at the stars over Dartmoor I instantly thought star trail and Bowerman’s Nose. Call me mad if you wish and to be honest I did think it myself but clear nights are few and far between and I couldn’t miss the opportunity. So now it was on I gave friend and fellow NAPC member Richard Taylor a call and within the hour we were on our way. (more…)

Bowerman The Hunter

Bowerman’s Nose, South Dartmoor.

There is an interesting legend surrounding ‘Bowerman’s Nose’ and here is an excerpt from the website Legendary Dartmoor, if you follow the link you can read the whole legend. I for one found it interesting but will not stop me trying a star trail here later in the year. (more…)

Tree-mendous Morning

Tree-mendous Morning

Ilsington, Dartmoor.

Another shot from my morning out on Dartmoor with David Clapp. The colours and mist through the scene were quite sublte and it was a struggle to retain detail throughout the image.  This was my last image from this location before moving on further onto the moor.

Folds On The Horizon

Ilsington, Dartmoor.

Got out this morning with my old college friend and professional landscape photographer David Clapp hoping for a misty sunrise. The mist was higher than we had hoped as our original intention to visit Mamhead needed a rapid rethink. Dartmoor seemed the only logical location as there was plenty of high ground to scout although now time was a little against us.

As we were climbing up towards Haytor it looked as if the mist wasn’t going to break but after a bit of driving around we settled on a view looking out over Ilsington where there were some pleasing folds.

Traditional Fisherman

Fisherman at Shaldon, South Devon.

It was my intention last night to shoot a field of hay bales but unfortunately the farmers were still there and didn’t want anybody around the machinery for safety reasons. To be honest the weather wasn’t ideal as it was overcast and flattened what little contrast there was.

I then decided to have a look around Shaldon and whilst taking a few pics I met this traditional fisherman. (more…)

Take A View

LPOTY 2011 shortlist.

I had some good news on Tuesday morning and received an email from ‘Take a view’ to say one of my images has made the shortlist for this years ‘Landscape Photographer of the Year’. The image which made the final stages was the image you see here of the Daymark. The Daymark sits above Froward Point and marks the east side entrance to the River Dart and the natural harbour of Dartmouth.

I hope to post all my submissions for LPOTY 2011 in the next few days.

Fire Tor

Fire Tor

Combestone Tor, Dartmoor.

Looked across to Haytor from my patio tonight and thought there was potentially a stunning sky on the cards so grabbed my kit and was out the door heading for one of my favorite haunts, Combestone Tor. When driving along the dual carriageway there was a stunning mackerel sky forming but my hopes were rapidly disappearing as I was nearing. When at the location it looked like there wasn’t going to be a sunset, but luck was on my side and I had about ten minutes of stunning light before I had to go. Here is my favorite shot from the session and was shot using a Lee 0.9 hard grad to balance the exposure.
