Ferryman’s Cottage

Exeter Ship Canal, South Devon.

This old cottage which is sits on the narrow strip of land between the Exeter Ship Canal and the Exe Estuary dates back to 1832 and became somewhat run down in recent years before being refurbished in 2010. The cottage which is available to rent now also doubles as a cafe between 16th June and the August Bank Holiday.

I have been meaning to visit here to photograph the cottage for sometime and was a little disappointed with the weather when I arrived on Monday evening. I visited here with a couple of friends and fellow photographers Mike Bartholomew and Richard Taylor and we were hoping for a glorious sunset which would have been setting at the end the long canal straight as you look towards Exeter. As it happens I instantly decided to take a look at the cottage from the ferryman’s path and was more than pleased with my final image.
