Keeping Your Powder Dry

Powdermills, Dartmoor.

Powdermills was back in the nineteenth century part of a gunpowder factory but now is the home to the Powdermills Pottery and remains part of the Duchy of Cornwall Estate. There are several building which remain today along with a few chimneys from the drying houses.

This image of a drying house chimney is a long exposure of several minutes shot early evening during a visit with fellow photographer and friend Richard Taylor. A Lee Filters Big Stopper was used to maximise the painterly effect of the clouds. Lens correction was difficult with this image as the chimney stack would emphasize any issues.

  1. Great movement in the clouds Martyn

  2. A very powerful image Martyn, you’ve caught the moody atmosphere so well! :)

  3. Very nice – love the movement in the clouds. That’s something I tried to get on my last visit here but to nowhere near as good effect :-)

  4. This is really lovely Martyn. The clouds look as if they have been hand painted. A lovely effect.

  5. Nicely composed Martyn with great detail and colours
